The time had come. This was it. A new chapter. A new beginning. I stepped off the plane onto the platform of Julius Nyerere Airport and could instantly feel the heat envelope my body – a welcomed change from the minus 20 degree Canadian cold I had left. I quickened my pace through the airport, past my fellow passengers who were still sorting through their carry-on’s or had stopped to use the restroom. The race to immigration comes down to the last 20 metres; those final steps that determine your place in the line-up and ultimately, your self-proclaimed glory as a traveler.
I grabbed my visa application papers from the counter – bypassed those that chose to fill them out on spot – pulled a strategically-placed pen from my pocket, began filling in the forms mid-step, turned the corner confident in the number of passengers I overtook and entered what…
