Going Back to the Basics!

Monday, May 19th, 2014 — It all started in Florida last month.  I tried to put on my denim shorts and it would not fit.  So I figured I probably brought Sabrina’s much smaller shorts by mistake.  But no, these were my shorts.  Size 8 Old Navy shorts that fit me perfectly six months ago.  So I wiggled and jiggled, jumped up and down, twisted and turned, until I could finally zip up the shorts.  I was not sure if this was an isolated case, so when I got home from vacation, I tried on first one suit, then another, only to find that they were a bit too snug.  So then I climbed on a weight scale just out of curiosity and didn’t like the numbers that flashed back at me.  I’ve gain more than 15 pounds in the past 4 months — and didn’t even notice.

The truth is that I have slipped.  As I have started to feel better, I have gone back to old bad habits.  Not working out.  Not eating right.  Not taking care of myself.  Not leading a balanced life.  I remember when I was ill, I made so many promises to myself.  I promised that I would re-evaluate my life.  That I would focus on what was important.  That I would live in health and vitality.  And I’ve done a pretty good job with this for two years.  But I find I am slipping.  And now it’s time to get back to basics.

What is it about the human condition that makes us forget what we’ve been through, when things are going well?  I see that with people around me who’ve had heart attacks, cancers and other debilitating illnesses.  For a while, we remember how fragile life is and how important it is to live life responsibly.  And then, we slip and get back to the craziness of life.  It is truly a strange paradox.

Now it’s time to get back to basics.  For me this means making friends with Goodlife Fitness again.  It means paying attention to what I eat.  It means rebalancing my life so that I am fulfilled mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally.  It is a journey to health and vitality.  So I am getting back on track.  I am taking the first step today to reclaiming my life.  I’m excited to re-balance my life and I can’t wait to meet the new and improved me!

Munira, I have been following your blog for a year now, and I too had a condition which left me 50lbs lighter 2012; but the insulin and other habbits as you put it has increased my weight by 20lbs so its been a steady increase of 2lbs per month on the average. So its tough when your’re at the brink of death and then to get back and gain weight again, the weight for me was loss of muscle and fat at the same time. Let me know what you’re eating for breakfast and lunch?
